One Pot Cooking For Easy, Delicious and Cheap Dishes

by Allison W. on July 17, 2011

Don’t you just hate washing up? The good news is that you can save money on your food bill and on liquid dish washing detergent simply by giving one pot cooking a go. This can be the easiest way to cook and serve up a meal if you’ve had a hard day at work; there is no reason why you still can’t have a tasty meal as well.

The good thing about it is that you can use pretty much any kind of ingredient. If you think about a casserole or stew for example, you will know that you get your meat, vegetables and potatoes all in one dish. It’s certainly nice to eat on a cold winter night, but there are one pot dishes that will suit all different times of the year as well.

The first thing you need to bear in mind is that your pot could be a saucepan, a crock pot or casserole dish, or even a shallow oven dish. It could also be a wok if you fancy a nice light home cooked Chinese dish, for example. So don’t restrict yourself with your cooking receptacle, because there are plenty of them you can work with.

Think about ingredients as well, because there are lots of ways you can cook up a one pot meal to make it go further. Personally, I love things like lentils and pulses, because not only are they good for you, but they also bulk out all kinds of dishes to fill you up and keep down the cost. Buy them in bulk and keep them handy: you’ll use them a lot more than you might think.

Some other great articles on easy-to-cook meals:

A slow cooker is ideal for one pot cooking, particularly if you are out at work all day. Just pop everything in first thing in the morning before you head out, and when you get home you’ll arrive to the smell of dinner already cooked for you. What could be better than that?

You can also look forward to being able to think practically and to save even more money by portioning out food for other meals as well. Buy some freezer bags or containers and get ready to divide up the leftovers into clearly marked bags for future meals. This is another advantage of one pot cooking: you can stock up your freezer and defrost your own ready meals to reheat whenever you want them.

Thinking ahead can certainly save you even more money when you use one pot cooking as the basis for a nutritious meal. Try and plan two meals a week using this method and think of ways you can get the cost down as much as you can. Being able to bulk out a one pot meal is great because it is easy to do –- it’s not so easy to bulk out other meals without it looking obvious.

Trawl the internet for recipes for your one pot cooking challenge, and you will find more material and information than you might imagine out there. And don’t forget that you can always add your own twist of genius to them as well, by creating your own personal versions of these dishes in the process.

So save money and save time by skipping on the dish washing, starting right now.
